But before you panic, switch off your heating system, or call out a professional straight away, there are several safe and straightforward checks you can perform yourself. Understanding the main radiator symptoms
Radiator problems usually fall into a handful of patterns, each pointing to a different cause. Looking at which part of the radiator is cold, and whether it is just one or the whole system, gives you a useful starting point.
Older guides often focus only on radiators that are cold at the top or at the bottom. In reality, modern homes around Bognor Regis, Chichester and Littlehampton often have multi-zone controls, smart thermostats and extensions, which add extra things to check.
Simple radiator troubleshooting table

Before you bleed anything, make sure the heating is off and the radiator has cooled so you do not risk burns. Have a cloth and a small container ready, and always use the correct bleed key.
Turn the bleed valve a quarter turn anti-clockwise until you hear air hissing out, then close it again as soon as water runs steadily. Afterwards, check the boiler pressure, as bleeding can drop it slightly.
Radiator hot at top, cold at bottom
When the top is hot but the bottom stays cold, the radiator may be partially blocked with sludge or debris. This restricts the flow of hot water and often shows up more on older systems.
You can try turning other radiators down to see if that encourages more heat through the problem radiator. If the lower section still will not warm up, it is usually time for a professional to look at power flushing or other cleaning options.
In some cases, poor balancing is also involved. Even after a flush, radiators may need their lockshield valves adjusted so each room gets its fair share of heat.
One radiator cold while others are hot
When just one radiator refuses to heat, the rest of the system is often fine, which is good news. It usually points to an issue local to that radiator: a stuck valve, trapped air or a closed lockshield.
Thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) checks
First, check the TRV is turned up and not set to frost or off. If it is on, but the radiator is still cold, the small pin underneath the TRV head may be stuck.
You can often check this safely:
Turn heating off and let the radiator cool.
Unscrew the plastic TRV head to expose the metal pin.
Gently press the pin down a few times. It should spring up freely.
If the pin is seized solid, avoid using force; this is a good point to call an engineer.
Lockshield and air checks
The lockshield valve is usually on the other end of the radiator and has a plastic cap or flat top that needs a small spanner to adjust. If this has been turned fully off in the past, the radiator will stay cold.
Turn the lockshield a quarter turn anti-clockwise and wait a few minutes with the heating on to see if heat starts to feed in. If the top gets warm first, you might also need a quick bleed as described earlier.
Whole heating system struggling
If several radiators are lukewarm or everything is slow to heat, the issue is more likely central to the system. That could be low boiler pressure, a circulation problem, a zone valve failure or a control issue.
Boiler pressure, programmer and thermostat zones
On most sealed systems, the boiler pressure gauge should sit around 1.0 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If it is much lower, the boiler may lock out or struggle to push water round the radiators.
If you know how to top the pressure up using the filling loop, you can bring it back into the recommended range shown in your manual. If pressure keeps dropping, stop topping up and call a Gas Safe engineer as there may be a leak.
Also double-check your programmer or smart controls. Make sure the heating schedule is on, you have selected the correct zone, and individual room thermostats are calling for heat. With multi-zone systems, it is easy for an extension circuit or upstairs zone to be turned off without noticing.
Pumps and motorised valves
If the boiler seems to fire but radiators stay cool, the circulation pump or motorised valves might not be working correctly. You may hear the boiler start then quickly shut down, or notice unusual noises around the airing cupboard.
These are not DIY jobs. If the system is noisy, you suspect a pump fault, or no radiators will heat despite the controls being set correctly, it is time to switch off, keep safe and book a professional visit.
Towel rails and radiators in extensions
Towel rails and radiators in extensions often sit at the furthest point of the system or even on their own small loop. That makes them more sensitive to poor balancing, stuck valves and low pump performance.
If your main house radiators are fine but the extension or towel rail is cold, check that:
